Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Application

The Gilman Scholarship Program is a program of the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and is assisted in its implementation by the Institute of International Education (IIE). The Gilman Program provides grants for undergraduate U.S. citizens of limited financial means to study and intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic prosperity. 

The Gilman Scholarship Program is pleased to announce that applications for the March 2020 Deadline are now open. The March 2020 Deadline application is open for applicants whose programs start from May 1, 2020 to April 30, 2021. This cycle encompasses Summer 2020, Fall 2020, Academic Year 2020-2021, Winter 2021, and Spring 2021 programs.

The deadline for the March 2020 Deadline application is Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at 11:59pm Pacific Time (PT).  Late applications will not be accepted under any circumstance.

Informational videos are available on the Gilman website to help you with the application process. The videos provide an overview of the program, tips on how to compose a competitive essay and also walks-through the online application.

The Gilman Scholarship Online Application consists of six sections.  You may click on the links to any of these sections at the top of the page and on the checklist at the right side of the page. You can work on any section in any order.

If eligible, you may submit the supplemental essay for the Critical Need Language Award.

Upload an unofficial or official transcript from your current and previous institutions.

       3. Essays:  

Statement of Purpose and Community Impact Essay

We recommend drafting your essays in a word processor before copying it into your application.

Start writing and proofreading your essays early in advance of the deadline.

4. Certification:  

Once you have filled out sections 1-3 of your application, you will confirm that the information entered is complete and accurate.

5. Survey:  

While this section is optional, your honest answers are appreciated for our statistical purposes. Any information included in this section will not be factored into the selection process.

6.Submission:  

Be sure to review that all of the sections have been completed and submit your application. Your application will not be considered if it is not submitted.

Please keep in mind the following as you complete your application for the Gilman International Scholarship:

  • The application system times out and will log out after 30 minutes of inactivity, so we recommend saving your information frequently. 
  • Plan to spend at least 5 to 10 hours to complete your application.
  • Review the Deadlines and Timeline web page. It is your responsibility to ensure that your application is complete by the deadline.
     
  • The application deadline is in Pacific Time. Therefore, please take into account the time difference. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.
  • Contact your study abroad and financial aid advisors before submitting your application. After submission, we recommend that you check on the status of your advisor certifications. Your application is not considered complete until they have submitted their certifications.
